Environmental Sustainability
Website: https://www.gaau1updesignstudio.hk

Gaau1 Up is a local design studio whose work encompasses recycling and upcycling plastic. Using locally sourced plastic, we transform innovative designs into various art pieces and products, striving to raise public awareness about the value of plastics. While recycling and sustainability are widely discussed, key questions remain for stakeholders: How can corporations, schools, and organizations implement sustainable policies and action plans? How can individuals be incentivized to recycle? What is the process behind recycling?
Traditional upcycled items often lack style and durability, hindering their reintegration into the recycling cycle, as they are frequently remanufactured with mixed materials (i.e., lower quality). At Gaau1 Up, the “Design and Build” component is strongly emphasized as we aim to transform recycled materials into more artisanal artworks. We are responsible for the entire upcycling process, including plastic crushing, design, reshaping, and product production, with the goal of upgrading homogenous plastic materials into more durable finished products like furniture or even incorporating them into architectural structures.
Our other core belief is that a change in public mindset on recycling is far more important and effective than advancements in recycling technologies and methods. We hope to bridge this gap by organizing workshops and increasing public engagement, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for plastic materials.
