Social Tech, Social Inclusion, Empowerment

Hong Kong currently faces a severe shortage of registered sign language interpreters due to the lack of education about HKSL and the high barriers to becoming a registered interpreter. This situation also worsens when HKSL interpretation becomes inconsistent, if not inaccurate, as non-registered volunteers may use false or non-standardised HKSL gestures. Noting the rise of such issues, Impact AI has developed our own HKSL translation app that aims to tackle the social problem of communication barriers, which has led to social exclusion for hearing-impaired individuals. The project targets beneficiaries such as individuals in the deaf community, deaf associations, educational institutions, workspaces, healthcare providers, and public spaces seeking to create inclusive environments. Our app can be used on a wide variety of occasions such as press conferences, taking official statements, building inclusive educational content, and other situations where translation is necessary for an inclusive environment. By providing accurate and culturally relevant translations of HKSL into written text and vice versa, the project addresses the need for effective communication. The objective of the project is to enhance accessibility, break down communication barriers, and empower individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to engage in various aspects of life fully.
