Founded in 2021 and incubated by Hong Kong Design Centre, Dress Green is a design-driven social enterprise that promotes sustainable development through creativity. One of Dress Green’s initiatives is UNI Green, of which the name “UNI” stands for “Uniform” and “Unique”. Believing in the uniqueness of uniforms, UNI Green is a programme that aims to lengthen the retail life cycles of overstock uniforms from schools and other uniformed corporates. After collecting unsold and/or unsaleable uniforms from the organisations, UNI Green hires job-seeking individuals - mostly from the disadvantaged community - to help give these uniforms a new life as souvenirs and stitched products. Unlike most graduation and corporate souvenirs that are mass-produced, UNI Green’s locally produced keepsakes are uniquely designed according to the motifs and colours specific to each supplying uniform. Some uniforms are also used in upcycling workshops that serve to educate students and staff members about upcycling. This initiative not only reduces uniform waste, but also creates meaningful employment opportunities for disadvantaged individuals and educates the community about sustainable fashion.
In 2022, Dress Green upcycled over 1,000 products and created over 1,000 hours of working opportunities for local elderly and housewives. Among these products, the ones designed with old uniforms through the project of UNI Green even won the DFA Design for Asia Award 2022 and Hong Kong Smart Design Award 2022. The story of UNI Green was also featured by RTHK, HK01, am730, Sing Tao, Yahoo!, Metro Broadcast, Metro Pop, and Parenting Headlines.
