Social Inclusion

Pink Dolphin Academy Limited is Hong Kong’s first female-friendly, culturally inclusive swimming and hydrotherapy academy. We offer female-exclusive swimming classes and hydrotherapy for women, especially those with ethnic minority (EM) backgrounds.

Currently, there are no aquatic activities suitable for most women of EM backgrounds in Hong Kong. This is because swimming classes available, public and private, are either religiously inappropriate for women following the Islamic practices, as they are held in mixed-gender pools and mostly coached by male coaches, or they simply lack linguistic diversity. In addition, modest swimming outfits that are appropriate for Muslim women, i.e., Burkini, are widely inaccessible in Hong Kong. As a result, EM women are epidemiologically more susceptible to chronic diseases that often develop from a sedentary lifestyle. That includes a high prevalence of metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, and joint degenerative diseases, namely osteoarthritis, amongst middle-aged EM women.

By providing an environment that is not only female-friendly but also culturally and linguistically diverse, Pink Dolphin Academy aims to inspire sportsmanship amongst ethnic minority women; promote physical, social, and emotional health; and more importantly, promote equity and inclusion in the arena of aquatic sports in Hong Kong - all at affordable prices.

In the last six months, we successfully trained 101 participants of nine different ethnicities, aged between 8 and 60. Soon, we will also offer hydrotherapy with live interpretation to middle-aged women suffering from metabolic diseases and joint degenerative diseases.
