Flowie: Closing the Loop on Urban Food Waste
In Hong Kong’s dense urban landscape, over 3,300 tonnes of food waste are sent to landfills every day, accelerating the city’s looming landfill crisis and severing the vital circular link between waste and agriculture. Precious organic nutrients are lost forever, while methane emissions rise and soils degrade.
Schools stand at the frontier of community change: as hubs where hundreds of families connect daily, they generate significant food scraps, yet face limited space for traditional composting while seeking meaningful ways to embed sustainability into their STEM curricula.
Flowie offers an elegant, all-in-one solution: a compact “Waste-to-Table” system that integrates worm-powered composting with vertical hydroponics. Food waste is fed to worms in an odor-free bin, producing rich nutrients that nourishes LED-lit hydroponic towers. Within a 2m² footprint, the system yields up to 20-30kg of fresh, pesticide-free greens monthly.
Designed with Hong Kong’s space constraints in mind, the modular units are easy to install and maintain. An accompanying Edu-Dashboard app tracks waste diverted, yields harvested, and CO₂ saved, while providing ready-to-use STEM lesson plans that turn daily operations into engaging learning experiences.
Led by Jack Leung (Founder of hydroponic farm and kindergarten director) and Kit Yeung (Social design graduate with hands-on experience in regenerative and kitchen operation). Flowie blends proven technology with educational impact. Starting with school pilots, we aim to divert thousands kilograms of waste annually, empower the next generation with circular thinking, and demonstrate a scalable model for high-density cities across Asia.
