Good Health & Well-Being, Education

SpeechUnite HK Limited (“SpeechUnite”) tackles the critical communication challenges faced by Cantonese-speaking elderly individuals with aphasia—a language disorder commonly caused by stroke or dementia. In response to Hong Kong’s ageing population and the stark lack of affordable, accessible speech therapy, the venture is pioneering an integrated, three-part solution designed to improve patients' quality of life and mitigate social isolation.

With funding support from the SIE Fund and incubation by Oxfam Grant4Good, our project, Aphasia Allies (《風「語」同路》), brings together:
(1) Comprehensive Aphasia Management – featuring subsidised screening and treatment sessions, complemented by a digital peer-support community;
(2) Digitalised Solutions – including the development of Hong Kong’s first Cantonese-specific aphasia training app with modified evidence-based speech therapy exercises, and an online resource hub; and
(3) Aphasia Awareness Campaign – to advocate the importance of aphasia management through educating caregivers and frontline workers, strengthening the wider support ecosystem by holding workshops and conducting research.

Over a 12-month period (2025–2026), the project aims to directly support 200 elderly individuals (70% from low-income households) and 100 caregivers and frontline staff. By merging technology with community-centred care, Aphasia Allies strives to establish a scalable and sustainable model that empowers users, supports carers, and promotes lasting social inclusion.
